The otolaryngology department provides comprehensive outpatient, inpatient and emergency services for
pediatric and adult patients. This is a general practice with a heavy weighting of chronic ear disease.
The typical physician’s weekly schedule is 2 full OR days a week and 2 ½ days in clinic.
Support includes 4 audiologists, RN case managers and clinic assistants. CT, MRI, ENG and ABR are all
offered on site. Call responsibility is 1/8 weeks when fully staffed with eight physicians. Only the on
call physician takes calls on weekends or after regular working hours. We are currently seeking to fill
one vacant position.
There are several unique features to this practice. Each provider travels to remote areas of the state four times a year to provide outreach clinics. This affords an opportunity to experience the different regions and cultures of Alaska. We have an association with two accredited residency programs - the University of Chicago and the University of Texas – Galveston – and a resident physician is under our training year round. The Alaska Federal Healthcare Access Network (AFHCAN) is one of the largest telemedicine programs in the world, and the Otolaryngology department works closely with AFHCAN to deliver care to remotely located patient populations. The department will provide over 2000 store and forward telemedicine encounters this year, and is actively involved in ongoing telemedicine research projects. Finally, the department began a cochlear implant program allowing for Native Alaskans to receive their implants without leaving the state.
